WHERE IT
ALL STARTED

There was a time when the Far West had a stronger voice. Stories travelled slowly but they travelled well — through local newspapers, community yarns, pub conversations and the people who lived them. But over time, that voice became quieter. Publications disappeared, local journalism faded and eventually there was no longer a magazine dedicated to telling the stories of the entire Far West region — and there hadn’t been for a very long time.

Then came the demise of the local newspaper, leaving an even greater hole in the market and, more importantly, in the community itself. The stories were still there — powerful, funny, heartbreaking, inspiring stories — but many were going untold. We saw people doing extraordinary things in small towns and remote communities, artists creating in isolation, families carrying generations of history, and characters whose lives deserved to be documented before they disappeared into the dust of time.

That was the beginning of Rasp & Sturt.

Born from a deep love of the outback and the people who call it home, Rasp & Sturt was created to celebrate the Far West in a way that felt authentic, positive and visually striking. We didn’t want to chase headlines or focus only on bad news. We wanted to uncover the stories often never heard — the quiet achievers, the dreamers, the battlers, the bush characters and the hidden corners of outback Australia that deserve to be seen and remembered.

Rasp & Sturt became more than just a magazine. It became a platform for preserving the soul of the outback — one story, one photograph and one conversation at a time.

We created Rasp & Sturt, to celebrate the unique beauty and culture of the Australian Outback. OUTBACK PEOPLE

Rasp & Sturt was created from a deep love of the Australian outback and the people who call it home. Across the far west and remote regions, there are countless stories filled with resilience, creativity, humour, hardship, history and heart — stories that are often overlooked or never told beyond the town limits.

We believe the outback is far more than a place on a map. It is a living community shaped by remarkable individuals from all walks of life — station owners, artists, publicans, truck drivers, musicians, volunteers, Indigenous elders, young dreamers and everyday people quietly doing extraordinary things.

At Rasp & Sturt, we are passionate about capturing these voices and moments in an authentic and visually engaging way. Through storytelling, photography and thoughtful journalism, we aim to celebrate the spirit, character and uniqueness of outback Australia while preserving the stories that might otherwise fade with time.

For us, it has never simply been about producing a magazine. It is about shining a light on the people behind the landscape — the faces, lives and experiences that give the outback its soul.
